Neue Arbeit

A table with four computer workstations, one of them equipped like a digital editing suite, another like a Shared Desk and two small videostations were installed on a four sided desktop workplace. The section reflected how the techno-economic transformation from an industrial to a cultural society has fundamentally altered the way work is organized. It showed as well how unemployed people are forced to increase their „opportunities on the labor market„ with further education and transitional jobs. But it reffered also to a concept of technological moderniszation that includes puplic phantasies, like the liberation of the work space from instituitions and spatial fixities in the late 60ties, which was made visible in a documentation of a performance by the austrian architect Hans Hollein „das mobile büro„ in 1969.

In a collaborative videoproject, directed by the artist Marion von Osten (Berlin/Zurich), different cultural producers of the k3000 office and studio buildng in Zurich, are telling about their flexible work models and subcultural desires, though they can only survive by taking temporary cash jobs in addition to their own projects.

Displaying architectual plans and an interview on the Desk Sharing concept of IBM Switzerland and a photo slideshow on the buildings interior by the swiss photographer Regula Bearth, the section brought together different models of flexibility: One that is very much depend on the coorporation, highly hirachised and controlled like the IBM Desk Sharing model, or is purely on economical success. The last was shown in a video on freelancers in the IT business, by the filmmaker Dominic Roost (Zurich), by focussing on the time management of the freelancers. Mostly all of them are performing themselves as fully autonomous and efficent entrepreneurs, meanwhile the cultural producers, mentioned above, represent themselves as a multitude of possible lifes and alternatives, and not just as a winning economical model.

A small video by Simone Rüssli (Basel) finished the reflection on flexible labour, adresssing the highly gendered Care Economy, which goes aside the digital workplace, keeping the new subjects of success fit for the job.
